[livejournal.com profile] lalunatique left the following feedback in one of her chapter reviews for my Maikka 2012 epic Trapped in Ba Sing Se:

Some of the dialogue tags felt unnecessary, something I forgot to add to the previous chapter's review but which applies here as well. I can sympathize because I also get the urge to control the way the readers take in the dialogue, the pauses, the pace and everything. Amy Raine talked me out of it, though, telling me to keep only the minimal number of descriptions and tags to let the readers use their imaginations. While you're nowhere near as bad as I was, you could stand to delete a 'she said' or 'she sighed' here and there.

What follows is my reply, which might be of help to other writers... )

I don't know how many of you do this, but I like to check TVTropes' ATLA Fanfic Recommendations page for new entries every so often. It's probably the least reliable of all the things I use to find new things to read (which are mostly various respected people's Favorite Stories list on FanFiction.net, so keep adding to them), but it has the benefit of pointing me to stuff I would never normally encounter, like quirky Zutara rom-com or interesting-but-not-really-interesting AU's.

In the past, back when the list was more exclusive, I used to hope to get my own stuff on there. I did indeed eventually see two of my pieces added (Mai's Ramblings even has a TVTropes page, but I'll cop to creating it myself purely for the fun of troping one of my own works, and a rather bizarre work at that), but as the list of recommendations grew, more and more of the list failed to impress me in any way, while my longer and more impactful stories failed to get added. That's, like, double Fail. (I would like to clarify that I wasn't upset, or jealous, or bitter or anything. My thoughts could pretty much be summarized as, "Well, I guess my readers aren't avid tropers, but I rather like most of my readers. It's cool.")

So imagine my surprise when I fired up the "History" tab for the page today during my lunch hour and found that the following had been added under the "Authors and Websites" heading:

Loopy777 is a fanfic author famed for the series [1].
  • Recommended by [[Tropers/Agogobell]]
  • Additional Info: An excellent fanfiction writer with a rather caustic sense of humor, she mainly writes stories for ATLA and Korra, though many are AU-ey. Heavily recommended are "Retroactive", "Lady on Fire", and "The Ember Island Lighthouse". Read any and all of her stuff!
That's (sic), by the way.

So, huzzah! I'm one of the premiere writers of ATLA fanfic. I've joined the exclusive ranks of Wren Sharpbeak, Lyralocke, Alabaster86, and Lady Azar de Tameran as the greatest Authors (Auteurs?) who have ever labored to put pen (quill, of course) to paper for the sake of the Avatar franchise. We need a team name, like "The Big Five" or "Team Boomerang" (because it has... um... I'll get back to you on that) or "Voltron Force" or something equally awesome and awe-inspiring. Maybe we could call ourselves the "Dangerous Ladies," except one of us hasn't been heard from in years, one of us is deceased, and one of us is... well, me, so maybe the name wouldn't really apply at all.

Although I didn't feel this way yesterday, I would just like to affirm my deep, deep belief that anyone who hasn't been added the TVTropes fanfic page is a lesser writer of fanfic. You know who you are. Which is all of you. Ha! Well, I'll make a generous exception for the ones who have at least had a story added to the page. Those peeps are allowed to eat the crumbs that fall from my dinner table. (Except for the bacon crumbs. Those are still mine, dog.)

Of course, don't take my word for it, just look at the recommendation of my Troper fan, who, despite having spotty knowledge both of the website's tagging system and my most famous work as cited by the entry itself, is a gentleperson of taste and discretion. Keep working, and maybe someday you, too, can be a Quasi-Dangerous Quasi-Lady.

Thank you all for indulging me in this moment of inspired silliness and caustic humor. In case any of Avatar Spirit's staff is reading this, I Am Joking. And remember, your ad could be here; ask about my low rates.

Last year, I published my original outline for my Maikka Fortnight story, commenting on how I changed my plans in the writing phase and why. I wasn't planning on doing the same thing this year, as my story was meant to be a lighthearted series of comedic events, but then a plot butted in and brought its annoying friends, the subplots. Since I have an original outline, anyway, I might as well post it for those who are interested in the writing process.

For those who haven't read "Trapped in Ba Sing Se," here are the links, and let it be known that it is very much not a mere shipping fic, for better or for worse. I recommend reading the story before these notes, otherwise stuff will get spoiled and/or you won't have the foggiest idea what I'm talking about in my retrospective comments.

As with last year, the plaintext are my original notes while anything bold in the spoiler cuts are my current comments. Discussion and criticisms are welcome.

Taken from [livejournal.com profile] amyraine, who stole it from other peoples.

"Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any fanfic I’ve written and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what’s going on in the character’s heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track."

That's right, thanks to my Awesome Inside Sources (TM), I was able to get a hold of a leaked scene from LoK: Book 2's story bible! Beware spoilers, because this is the final scene in the entire season! This scene is some powerful stuff, and addresses several major plots from both Book 1 and Book 2. Don't tell anyone, though, because I don't want my Awesome Inside Sources (TM) to be outed.

Requisite Info: The SDCC panel revealed that Korra is abusing the Avatar State, using it play games with the Air Girls, and Tenzin reprimands her for turning it into a toy. Click to see how this will be resolved...

Let's just pretend that [livejournal.com profile] lavanyasix didn't have to remind me to post the announcement here. (Sometimes, I forget that LJ is more than just my Friends page.) The info is all in on the Maikka Fans deviantArt group, but those who don't have an account over there can just let me know about any submissions via a note or something over here, and I'll make a little index so that everything gets maximum exposure. Details about the Fortnight, including the August 5th through August 18th runtime, are below the cut.

Lin Bei Fong on... Makorra!

"They say that all is fair in love an war, but in the United Republic we have this fancy new idea called a 'war crime,' and if ever that concept applied to a romantic relationship, it definitely applies to The Legend of Korra's flagship love story, the coming together of Mako the Dirt Poor Pro-Bender and Avatar Korra.

When it comes to the Avatar franchise, it's either boom or bust. Since the original Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon series ended in 2008, little has been released for the property aside from an Art Book in 2010, but that was but a brief sip of water to the thirsty fans traveling across a four-year-long desert. (Then again, it could be worse; Moses could be our travel guide.) Now, a sequel series called The Legend of Korra is about to air its season finale, and Dark Horse continues to publish its series of graphic novels with Avatar: The LastAirbender, The Promise - Part 2. Those who read my review of the first part may recall that I had plenty to say about the book's flaws, and the many ways it failed to live up to the cartoon epic to which it purports to be a sequel. I'm sure everyone who's reading this is just burning to know if I think Part 2 is just as bad.

Well, I'm hardly going to give that away in the opening paragraph, am I? Massive spoilers coming, sweetie.

If you've a frequent reviewer of my stories, I've probably mentioned my longest ongoing project to you at some point. It is called "One Hundred Men" and at one point it had the subtitle of "The Life and Times of Piandao." I've been working on this thing for four years, on and off, as it expanded from a one-shot fight scene to a three-part action story to an eleven-part life story to an extensively rewritten twelve-part life story.

I just completed the first complete draft.

Yes, I've already been doing rewrites and editing on various parts, but I finally have a complete story. It actually feels like I'm going to be able to release this thing in the near future, for a nice change. I know it won't be worth the wait, but just removing this ax that's been hanging over my dinner table will be a huge relief.

Now I just need to find the right beta. Ideally, it would be someone who knows how to do character-focused tales, and is also a quasi-expert in history or faux-history. Double-ideally, I wouldn't be robbing myself of a review by using one of my three-and-a-half regular reviewers. (Averaged.) But that's a relatively minor concern. And no, I'm not fishing, here. Just sharing.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to do a little dance. It may involve shaking my booty, just a little.

EDIT: Credit to Piandao.org for the new icon. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] plushulala!

I had an idea for an original Fantasy story, and had to type it out. If I ever finish this, I guess it would be novel-sized. I could always put it on Kickstarter and see if it could make me money even after I posted the whole thing online. For now, it's LJ exclusive.

My normal internet hangout is down, so I thought I'd come hang here on LJ. However, because there is nothing interesting about my life (and if there was, I probably wouldn't tell *you* about it anyway), all I have for you is fanfic. As I've randomly mentioned before in various private communications, I'm working on a multi-chapter depiction of Piandao's life story up to the point where he definitively secures his freedom from service to the Fire Nation. I've actually been working on it for several years now, not counting all the time I take off to pursue other projects or because I feel like it.

Recently, I've been pushing to finish the first complete draft, and in doing so, wound up having to go back to make some changes to previously completed chapters.

That's when I realized that my entire Chapter 2 was complete trash and needed to be re-written. Yay.

I'm still not done with it, as the rewrite effort has expanded things to the point where I'm going to have to cut Chapter 2 in half, and then if I do that I'll need to completely reshuffle things because at some (very stupid) point I thought it would be clever to have Chapter 1 set in the story's present, Chapter 2 in the past, Chapter 3 in the present, Chapter 4 in the past, etc (and if you don't get the pattern, no wonder math is considered an arcane art these days). Still, I just completed what can be considered a story arc within Chapter 2 (see, this is why it needs to be chopped up) that I submitted by itself as an entry for Avatar Spirit's unofficial short story contest. It actually won (thanks to the judge specifically not giving a word limit this time), so I figure it might be worth sharing in a more public venue. Note that this is the first draft of this particular segment, so any constructive criticism would be especially appreciated.

If you haven't heard about "Korra Nation" yet, you can find out about it by clicking the following link. Full disclosure: each click gets me points that accumulate towards entering me in a contest to win a full trip to this year's San Diego Comic Con. If you sign up through this link, I get more points and can reach my goal fast, but don't consider yourself pressured.

Beta: Lavanya Six. Without her, it would have been a much weaker tale.
Summary: After they met the Avatar, but before their leader Jet would encounter Zuko in Ba Sing Se, something happened to break the Freedom Fighters up and send them out into their world. This is the story of their last battle, and their last moments as friends.
