[livejournal.com profile] lalunatique and [livejournal.com profile] kimberly_t have this on their fanfiction.net profiles, and I decided to finally have fun with it. Feel free to add your own, and maybe you can make the list. Don't worry about insulting me, I think I have that covered already.

10. All the sentences are long, and nary a statement is made without at least one comma. In fact, it would probably be more accurate to say that sentences wear commas like jewelry.

9. Purple prose abounds, but not in the way you usually see it. Instead of long paragraphs of descriptions, characters will ruminate on what they're sensing, and adjectives will randomly pounce like guerrilla fighters in the wilderness. More often than not, all of this description will somehow manage to tie in to one or more ongoing themes, whether or not it's appropriate or likely.

8. Any romance will be chaste romance. If it weren't for the odd kiss every so often, it'd be hard to tell if the pairings are actually romantic in nature or merely an example of two very supportive friends. This is not psychologically significant in any way.

7. Any romantic angst will be quirky romantic angst. Pairings will rarely suffer from external forces trying to keep them apart, and no character will attempt to break off a romance for the other party's perceived good. Instead, all the conflict will come from the characters struggling to even tell if they're attracted to each other, and then after they acknowledge it, they'll still waffle on deciding if the romance is worth the lifestyle compromises they'll have to make for it. This is not psychologically significant in any way.

6. Every single character thinks in a highly rational manner , and will be given to frequent bouts of dispassionate self-analysis. Yes, even the crazy ones. Especially the crazy ones. This is not psychologically significant in any way.

5. Don't look for stories about the main pairings of the original cartoon. In fact, don't look for the main characters of the original cartoon. Minor characters and strange crack-pairings rule the day.

4. It doesn't matter how inappropriate it is for the story, there will be comedic elements. This is not psychologically significant in any way.

3. Sokka or Mai. Just... Sokka or Mai. This is as psychological as it comes.

2. Serious works will often include, if not feature, characters of ambiguous, unusual, or absent morality. The presentation of these characters makes it look like that kind of behavior is being advocated.

1. Fight scenes. Fight scenes with more detail than can ever be narratively justified. Also, expect the best action sequences to randomly stop and give the POV character's full resume in a mini-essay on how awesome they are.

I don't know how many of you do this, but I like to check TVTropes' ATLA Fanfic Recommendations page for new entries every so often. It's probably the least reliable of all the things I use to find new things to read (which are mostly various respected people's Favorite Stories list on FanFiction.net, so keep adding to them), but it has the benefit of pointing me to stuff I would never normally encounter, like quirky Zutara rom-com or interesting-but-not-really-interesting AU's.

In the past, back when the list was more exclusive, I used to hope to get my own stuff on there. I did indeed eventually see two of my pieces added (Mai's Ramblings even has a TVTropes page, but I'll cop to creating it myself purely for the fun of troping one of my own works, and a rather bizarre work at that), but as the list of recommendations grew, more and more of the list failed to impress me in any way, while my longer and more impactful stories failed to get added. That's, like, double Fail. (I would like to clarify that I wasn't upset, or jealous, or bitter or anything. My thoughts could pretty much be summarized as, "Well, I guess my readers aren't avid tropers, but I rather like most of my readers. It's cool.")

So imagine my surprise when I fired up the "History" tab for the page today during my lunch hour and found that the following had been added under the "Authors and Websites" heading:

Loopy777 is a fanfic author famed for the series [1].
  • Recommended by [[Tropers/Agogobell]]
  • Additional Info: An excellent fanfiction writer with a rather caustic sense of humor, she mainly writes stories for ATLA and Korra, though many are AU-ey. Heavily recommended are "Retroactive", "Lady on Fire", and "The Ember Island Lighthouse". Read any and all of her stuff!
That's (sic), by the way.

So, huzzah! I'm one of the premiere writers of ATLA fanfic. I've joined the exclusive ranks of Wren Sharpbeak, Lyralocke, Alabaster86, and Lady Azar de Tameran as the greatest Authors (Auteurs?) who have ever labored to put pen (quill, of course) to paper for the sake of the Avatar franchise. We need a team name, like "The Big Five" or "Team Boomerang" (because it has... um... I'll get back to you on that) or "Voltron Force" or something equally awesome and awe-inspiring. Maybe we could call ourselves the "Dangerous Ladies," except one of us hasn't been heard from in years, one of us is deceased, and one of us is... well, me, so maybe the name wouldn't really apply at all.

Although I didn't feel this way yesterday, I would just like to affirm my deep, deep belief that anyone who hasn't been added the TVTropes fanfic page is a lesser writer of fanfic. You know who you are. Which is all of you. Ha! Well, I'll make a generous exception for the ones who have at least had a story added to the page. Those peeps are allowed to eat the crumbs that fall from my dinner table. (Except for the bacon crumbs. Those are still mine, dog.)

Of course, don't take my word for it, just look at the recommendation of my Troper fan, who, despite having spotty knowledge both of the website's tagging system and my most famous work as cited by the entry itself, is a gentleperson of taste and discretion. Keep working, and maybe someday you, too, can be a Quasi-Dangerous Quasi-Lady.

Thank you all for indulging me in this moment of inspired silliness and caustic humor. In case any of Avatar Spirit's staff is reading this, I Am Joking. And remember, your ad could be here; ask about my low rates.
